How to Apply for the New Digital Number Plates in Kenya

The government of Kenya introduced new generation digital number plates on August 30th, 2022.

These number plates are fitted on all imported vehicles at the point of entry. However, owners of already registered vehicles are required to apply for the new plates.

The new plates not only enhance the visual appeal of vehicles but also incorporate advanced features such as a QR code, NTSA serial number, Kenyan flag, hologram, and microchip.

Manual Application

You can apply for the number plates using the following steps:

Step 1: Get an application form from the NTSA (National Transport and Safety Authority).

Step 2: Fill in the form by providing the vehicle particulars and indicating the type of plates needed.

Step 3: Deliver the fully filled form to the nearest NTSA office.

Step 4: Make a payment of Ksh 3000 for motor vehicles or Ksh 1500 for motorbikes.

Step 5: Once the application is processed, you will receive an SMS notification specifying when and where to pick up the new plates.

Online Application via TIMS (Transport Integrated Management System)

Step 1: Log in to the NTSA website using the following link: NTSA TIMS.

Step 2: After logging in, click on the vehicle registration option.

Step 3: Select “Reflective No. Plate” and click on “Apply for reflective plate.”

Step 4: Choose your vehicle from the provided list and click on “Next.”

Step 5: Select “NEW GENERATION PLATE” as the reason for your application.

Step 6: Choose your preferred notification method (email or SMS).

Step 7: Select the desired number plate format (oblong or square) and choose from the available options.

Step 8: Upload a PDF copy of your original logbook and plates (both front and rear).

Step 9: Select the collection center and provide the ID details of the person who will collect the plates.

Step 10: Confirm the vehicle particulars, and proceed to make a payment of Ksh 3,050 using M-Pesa.

Step 11: Once the payment is made, you will receive a collection notification within 7 days, either through SMS or email.

Cost of Replacing a Number Plate

To replace a number plate in NTSA, the cost is Ksh 3000 for motor vehicles and Ksh 1500 for motorcycles. If you prefer personalized or customized plates, the cost will be Ksh 30,000.

Processing Time

The processing time for new number plates in Kenya is approximately 7 days. NTSA will notify you via SMS or email once the number plates are ready for collection.

Deadline for New Number Plates

The registration period for the new number plates commenced on October 1, 2022. Motorists who fail to change their number plates within the 18-month deadline will be subject to a penalty of Ksh 20,000.
