In Kenya, it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle of any kind without a current and valid driver’s license. According to the traffic Act cap 403, section 30 (1) states that “No person shall drive a motor vehicle of any class on a road unless he is the holder of a valid driving license or a provisional license endorsed in respect to that class of vehicle.” This means that if a person does not have a legal license or a temporary license with the appropriate endorsement, they are not allowed to drive a car.
In subsection 7 of Section 30, it is stated that “Any person who contravenes or fails to comply with this section shall be guilty of an offence and liable—”
(a) upon first conviction, to a fine of not more than twenty thousand shillings or to imprisonment for a term of not more than three months, or both;
(b) on each consecutive conviction, to a fine of not more than thirty thousand shillings or to imprisonment for a term not more than six months, or to both such fine and imprisonment; provided, however, that such fine and imprisonment may not exceed the total amount imposed.
If you do not want to find yourself on the wrong side of the law, it is imperative that you possess a driving license that is in good standing.
